SOCIAL SCIENCE
The goal of the social studies program is to provide students with a thematic and integrated program of instruction. A differentiated curriculum is presented based on an applied learning framework.
Content:
Content is related to broad-based issues, themes, or problems. All curricular areas are integrated into the study of history. Experiences are comprehensive, related, and mutually reinforcing. Self-selected topics allow for in-depth learning.
Process:
Activities are presented that evoke higher-level thinking. Open-ended questions, discovery, and freedom of choice are encouraged. Group interaction and proof of reason encourage students to strive for supporting answers with evidence: more than one right answer. The writing process will be taught in all social science classes.
Product:
Students produce products that challenge existing ideas and produce "new" ideas. The development of products that utilize new and varied technology is encouraged. Student outcomes are evaluated by using appropriate and specific criteria through the use of rubrics, reflection, portfolios and showcases.
