SCIENCE

The goal of the science program is to provide students the opportunity to become scientifically literate individuals who can understand, demonstrate and apply the processes of science in real life situations. Students will be encouraged to develop attitudes and habits that foster curiosity about the world we live in and sensitivity to all living things.

Content:

Content is based on the California State Science Standards for Life Science and Physical Science. The science curriculum is designed to reflect the interrelatedness among the sciences and other curricular disciplines, and to integrate instruction in the processes for proper investigation and experimentation.

Process:

A variety of inquiry-centered strategies will be utilized to develop students? problem solving and higher level thinking abilities. Students will participate in laboratory activities designed to apply scientific process skills, to facilitate their ability to communicate scientific observations and knowledge, and to guide students to respect scientific evidence. Assessment strategies will be designed to accurately evaluate students? skills and academic knowledge.

Product:

Students produce written work that demonstrates an understanding of academic and conceptual scientific knowledge. Communication skills are reinforced utilizing scientific processes and investigative procedures. The development of projects using a variety of print and electronic resources is encouraged. Student outcomes are evaluated by use of appropriate assessment strategies and specific criteria, rubrics, reflection and showcases.
