The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District is committed to providing a challenging program for gifted and talented learners that maximizes their potential, inspires a desire for excellence, and promotes a sense of responsibility to self and society.
Believing that it is our fundamental responsibility to educate all students so they may reach their full potential, it is our vision that the District's gifted and talented educational program will maximize each student's continuous academic growth, recognize and enhance individual strengths, and nurture the student's social and emotional development.
Maximize each student's continuous academic growth Provide a balanced educational experience across all curricular areas with opportunities to: Develop a variety of problem-solving strategies through the application of critical and creative thinking. Develop effective oral and written communication skills. Incorporate technology into the educational experience. Provide instruction which is modified for complexity, depth, and acceleration. Provide opportunities to participate in and develop an appreciation for the fine arts. Provide instruction and tools for developing organization and study skills. Teach students to understand their thinking processes. Provide knowledgeable staff, trained in the most current and effective gifted educational practices. Provide a program that is comprehensive, structured, and sequenced between, within, and across grade levels K-12. Recognize and enhance individual strengthsProvide opportunities for students to work at levels commensurate with their abilities, needs and interests. Set goals and address student needs through individual planning that involves teacher, parent, and student. Accommodate individual learning styles. Nurture each student's social and emotional development Address each student's unique cognitive and emotional profile. Create an environment where individual differences and divergent thinking are valued. Provide an emotionally safe environment in which to learn. Encourage civic responsibility. Expectations Student Involvement Preparedness Brings needed materials to and from school. Attends regularly and promptly. Completes assigned work on time. Completes and returns homework on time. Organizes materials. Records assignments in his/her planner daily. Participation Listens attentively. Takes part in discussions. Asks clarifying questions. Develops library habit. Shares personal expertise with others. Informs parents of long-term projects. Reviews school activities with family. Responsibility Respects rights, feelings, and property of others. Follows directions. Assumes responsibility for learning. Manages time wisely. Works cooperatively with others. Strives for excellence in academic work. Achievement Standards* 1. Maintains a minimum B average in the core academic classes: Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Science, Science). 2. Maintains a minimum 'S' (Satisfactory) in citizenship in the academic classes. Teacher Involvement Ensures that students are proficient in basic skills. Provides instruction and activities that require students to stretch and apply their prior knowledge and understanding. Assigns homework that builds upon concepts presented in class. Assigns long-term projects that require students to delve deeply into a subject that has been presented in class or that is of particular interest to the student. Assists students in developing organizational skills through the use of planners, time management techniques, etc. Communicates with students and parents regularly about student progress and/or needs. Parent Involvement Supports student during transition to magnet program. Provides for student's transportation. Assists with extended work requirements and time management. Checks planner and discusses assignments with student daily. Attends parent conferences. Attends special programs. Shares special expertise with class if possible. Encourages student to pursue personal interests and to discuss school activities. Maintenance of Achievement Standards When a middle school student is struggling in the GATE program, as evidenced by a 'C' or lower in achievement, a GATE Student Evaluation form will be completed by the teacher(s), and a parent-student-teacher conference will be scheduled. An Action Plan will be developed at the conference with specific dates for follow-up to monitor implementation of the Action Plan. If the student does not successfully implement the Action Plan, the Evaluation Team will meet for a Final Evaluation, including a placement recommendation, once all avenues of accommodation have been explored.
