Program

GATE Magnet curriculum will be consistent with Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District's policy for all students at the middle school level with some exceptions due to the broad-based, in-depth nature of the four core subject areas. Curriculum is designed to be:

Accelerated:

In-depth and complex

Investigative:

Lab activities, presentations, research projects

Integrative:

Integrated core subject instruction (math/science/language arts/social science)

Experiential:

Experiments that enrich, relate and extend knowledge

Homework

Each subject area has a homework time commitment needed for academic growth and development.

These are:

Math - 45-60 MINUTES FOUR TO FIVE NIGHTS A WEEK

Science - 30 MINUTES FOUR NIGHTS A WEEK

Social Science - 30 MINUTES FOUR NIGHTS A WEEK

Language Arts - 30 MINUTES FOUR NIGHTS A WEEK

Long-term Assignments

Since GATE students are accelerated learners, the time needed to master the basic content will be reduced and the curriculum will be supplemented with extended enrichment activities. Projects, presentations, preparation for field experiences, actual field experiences and extra time with teachers, if needed, will be a regular part of the program. Students will be given sufficient advance notice of all projects and presentations, and will be assisted in developing effective time management skills so that completion of the assignment does not result in frantic activity the night before the assignment is due.

NOTE: Students will need to work on these long-term assignments on an ongoing basis. The amount of time required for these projects will be in addition to the regular homework time commitments indicated above.

Activities

We hope that students will take the opportunity to experience all of the richness provided at the middle school level through music, art, technology, foreign language, and an after-school program that has been in the top five in the state for many years!
