Scoliosis Screening

February 15, 2010

The State of California requires that all 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys be screened for scoliosis.  Scoliosis is a sideways (lateral) curvature of the spine that usually develops between 10 and 16 years of age.  The screening will be conducted on April 30, 2010 during physical education class.

The exam consists of a visual inspection of the unclothed back and upper torso.  Girls will wear their bras during the exam.  Parents will be notified by mail if their child’s scoliosis screening indicates a need for further medical evaluation.

If you have questions, please call Health Services at (714) 986-7170.

Should you decide that you DO NOT wish to have your child participate in this screening; a written notice by a parent/guardian will be required to be on file.  Please have the note sent to the health office at your child’s school.

Thank You,

Swine Flu / H1N1

Dear Parents,

As you have heard through the media, there has been a recent increase in the cases of Swine Flu through out the world. In the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, we are taking every precaution to minimize the risk of exposure to this condition among students and staff.
The Orange County Department of Education has created a Swine Flu website http://www.ocde.us/flu_update.asp to provide schools and parents with the most current information about the swine flu outbreak. Swine flu is a respiratory illness of pigs caused by infection with swine influenza A virus (SIV) that can occasionally affect humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has determined that the swine flu virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human. On this website you will find links to informational sites about swine flu as well as toolkits and other resources that schools and parents may use to increase awareness about swine flu prevention and treatment. The website will be updates as new information becomes available.
What can teachers do to help prevent the spread of the Swine Flu?
• Discuss with students how to limit the spread of infections and the need for frequent hand washing. This includes:
• Sneeze or cough in elbow or tissue.
• Wash hands frequently, especially after coughing.
• Avoiding touching eyes, nose and mouth.
• Send students home that have a fever, cough, body aches, chills, sore throat, headache, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhea. They should remain at home for at least 24 hours following a fever, vomiting, diarrhea or significant symptoms unless they have a physician note indicating the student is not contagious.
• If a student does not have a fever, but has other associated symptoms, the school staff will call Health Services and a district school nurse will contact the parent to determine if the student needs to go home.
• Staff will stay home if they have flu-like symptoms.
• Ensure that restrooms, doorknobs, classroom/lunch tables are cleaned.

What can parents do at home?
• Encourage your child and other family members to wash hands frequently and do not share food or drinks.
• Use common sense and keep your child home from school if they have any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, body aches, chills, sore throat, headache, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhea.
• Call your child’s physician if you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s illness or contact our Health Service office at (714) 986-7170 and ask to speak to a district school nurse.

Thank you for working with us to keep your children healthy.

Sincerely,

Michelle DeHaven
Lead District Nurse
