Happy Birthday Kraemer!

I want to thank all of you who attended our Open House and our 50th Anniversary celebration.  The night was a tremendous success with over 1700 people in attendance. This was easily one of my favorite evenings of the year because it gave us the opportunity to show off our school and for your children to share some of their accomplishments.  We celebrated a rich tradition that many of you have been part of for a long time.  Several former students, teachers, staff and administrators were in attendance to help celebrate with us.  So many people have contributed to making Kraemer a truly unique place to work and learn.

Part of the celebration was the opening of a time capsule that was buried near our flagpole in our 25th year.  It wasn’t until we opened the capsule that I began to truly appreciate the rich traditions of our school.  As I looked at each artifact, it occurred to me that even though some of the programs, academic competitions, and staff members have changed over time, there is a common thread that connects each of us to this school.  We have built a school culture that is student focused and one that supports and embraces diversity. The foundation has been laid for a standard of excellence regardless of each student’s ability level or background.  That spirit is thriving today among our current group of students.  I can point to our Math Counts team who just placed 6th in Southern California in State competition, or our Science Olympiad team who recently finished 3rd in Orange County and will compete at the state level in two weeks.  Our MESA math and science program has swept first place in their recent local and state competitions.  I am proud of our AVID students who have made us a National Demonstration school to serve as a model for others.  Our seventh grade social science students recently set a school record by scoring 82 perfect scores in the Richard Nixon Geography contest two weeks ago.  Over 110 of our 8th grade students were recently accepted into the prestigious International Bachelorette and Val tech programs at Valencia High School.  The list goes on and on.

One of the items found in the time capsule was an old newsletter that was written by Glen Collard in our 25th year.  He referenced three Characteristics of an effective school.  The first characteristic was effective home school relations.

The document read “in an effective school, parents are appreciated, encouraged to help their children at home, invited to participate in school affairs, and are given opportunities to make important school decisions.”

This spirit is alive and well today.  Many of our parents volunteer so much of their time to help with Dance, Colorguard, Band, Orchestra, Book Fairs, Science Olympiad, Math counts and Mesa to name a few.  Our PTA is always actively looking for opportunities to make our school even better.  This doesn’t happen by itself.  It takes parent leadership and a willingness to do whatever it takes to help our students and our school.  I would like to thank our PTA President, Tammy Hayashibara and our entire PTA Board for their leadership this year and look forward to working with them through next year.

As we celebrate our school’s history, we also embrace our future and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.  Our school will complete the final phase of modernization in June which will result in a modernized band room, boys and girl’s locker room, and administration building.  The front of the school and lower parking lot will receive a face lift which will change the look of the school.

In June, we will start building a 3200 square foot library/media center in the center of our campus.  The building will be equipped with Smart Board technology and enough computer stations to accommodate an entire class. Most of our classrooms are now equipped with Smart Board technology which will result in a shift in how we deliver instruction to your children.  Teaching will be more interactive and learning can be assessed in real time.  Our teachers are excited about the possibilities of this new technology.

I look forward to the work that lies ahead and I am proud of our students for all they have accomplished.
