The Kraemer ASB Leadership Program is an eighth grade elective class that serves the school as the student council, providing representation and activities for the entire student body. The program focuses on leadership development, through an emphasis on planning techniques, decision-making skills, problem solving, organizational skills, group dynamics, principles of communication, budgeting and issues of public relations. The class emphasizes skill building, planning, implementation evaluation and experiential learning for the purpose of growing the individual students in the areas of respect, responsibility, service and initiative. An outgrowth of the program is the promotion and enhancement of a positive school climate.
What is AVID? AVID is offered as an elective course that, like any other class, meets regularly. Each week, students receive two hours of instruction, two hours in tutor led study groups, and one hour in motivational activities and academic survival skills, including critical reading and writing skills. AVID students are encouraged to take prep courses (in middle school) and move into honors/advanced placement courses and/or International Baccalaureate. AVID seniors may receive University of California a-g elective credit upon completion of the AVID Seminar class. AVID Center Mission The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle: will succeed in a rigorous curriculum, will complete a rigorous college preparatory path, will enter mainstream activities of the school, will increase their enrollment in four year colleges, and will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society. AVID’s systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide/districtwide learning and performance. AVID Student Profile The AVID student is a student with academic potential: Average-to-high test scores 2.0-3.5 GPA College potential with support Desire and determination The AVID student meets one or more of the following criteria: First in family to attend college Historically least served in four-year colleges (e.g., underrepresented as a racial or ethnic group) Low income Special circumstances
The KMS Color Guard is a performance group on campus. It is an extra-curricular activity that meets twice a week after school and some Saturdays throughout the school year. It has a high reputation of being one of the best junior high Color Guards in Southern California. The KMS Color Guard has consistently earned top awards at local parades and Winter Guard competitions for the past decade.
To become a member of the team, each girl will be asked to attend a weeklong clinic to learn the audition routine. This year the dates are: 5/27, 5/28, 5/29 from 4:00-6:00. Saturday 5/30 from 9AM -11AM and Auditions will be held on Monday 6/1 from 4:00-7:00. In addition to the routine, each girl will be asked to submit teacher evaluations for all CORE classes. This is to ensure that all candidates are academically eligible for participation.
As with all performance groups there is a financial contribution. There is an approximate fee of $600 to become a member. This fee covers the Fall & Spring Performance uniform, jazz shoes, warm-ups, flags, etc. Do not worry though; this fee is not required all at once. There is a payment plan that goes into effect for 6 months once a student makes the team. This equates to $100 a month until November.
Teachers please submit information about the program to Mrs. Ehrich.
Kraemer Middle School has been an integral part of the Placentia-Yorba Linda community since 1959 and for more than 10 years has been designated the GATE magnet program for the middle school level. The district selected Kraemer for its diverse population, professional staff and unique opportunities for enrichment.
The GATE magnet program at Kraemer Middle school is unique in several ways. The core academic classes (math, language arts, social science, and science) are composed of GATE students only. This unique feature allows our GATE teams the flexibility to provide a more challenging, accelerated curriculum that utilizes multiple instructional strategies such as practical experiences, field trips, science experiments, debates, presentations, competitions in math and writing, direct connection to high school and university programs, and the opportunity to be socially active in our nationally acclaimed activities program.
In addition, our proximity to Valencia High School enables the program to offer a broad-based curriculum of math, science, and electives to our GATE students by affording them the opportunity of enrolling in Algebra Honors, Geometry and Geometry Honors on the Valencia campus. Other options at the high school include French, Japanese, Biology, Technology, and Speech and Drama. This “bridge program” is unique to Kraemer and a great number of gifted and talented students do take advantage of this partnership.
In recent years, GATE students have had the opportunity to participate in educational field trips to enhance cross-curricular units of study. Destinations have included San Francisco, Sacramento, Catalina Island, Museum of Tolerance, Bowers Museum, “Physics Day” at Knott's, Workshop in the Woods, IMAX Theater, the Performing Arts Center and visitations to colleges and universities. These field experiences enhance the classroom instruction and extend the learning to the larger community setting. Students have the opportunity to meet legislators, become part of a mock trial, visit with holocaust survivors and authors, and begin their networking as they prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.
In June of this year, our students will participate in our 8th annual "ShowTime." This unique event challenges students to perform at the highest pedagogical level of thinking… teaching. Students select an area of expertise and present a lesson to their peers, parents, and teachers to demonstrate their knowledge of a self-selected topic. The result is truly amazing! Please join us for the student presentations, awards ceremony and an ice cream social afterward. If you are interested in attending, please check the calendar of events on this website for the date and time. All are welcome!
The Kraemer Peer Leadership Program is a seventh grade elective class. The program focuses on developing the components of the book, Twenty-one Indispensable Qualities of a Leader. The class will develop leadership skills centered on those characteristics and will be applied while serving peers and the Kraemer community in activities that enhance our positive school climate. Members of the program will share responsibilities that include planning and implementing lunchtime activities, student recognition programs, special events and helping with various programs around the school. Students selected to the program must be willing to give up portions of their time to serve the school community. This class is not a pre-requisite for the eighth grade ASB Leadership Class.
Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers.
